East Williston Modern Rustic

…there lived a pair of easygoing, busy professionals whose grown children had all made homes of their own.

After raising a family and welcoming grandchildren, it was time for this couple to focus on themselves. Decades had passed since their last home renovation and their design tastes had changed dramatically. While they once loved the traditional style of their home, they longed for a more transitional scheme focused on cleaner lines and lighter colors.

They had already begun a kitchen renovation when they realized that they needed the help of a talented interior designer to complement and enhance their original plans.

They wanted a welcoming family space with adequate seating designed for informal living. Between their grandchildren and pets, it was essential that we select elegant, durable, high-quality pieces that would stand up to celebrations, sleepovers, and lazy Sundays.

Their design style… coastal, airy, organic

What I rescued them from…

  • A dark, dated living room
  • Worn-out furniture and decor
  • An old fashioned dining room
  • A style that no longer reflected their tastes

How I Gave Them Their Fairytale Ending

These clients had a great appreciation for art. They loved a coastal vibe full of natural textures — like linen, wood, and rattan — and soothing hues. Using mood boards, material samples, and detailed floor plans, I provided a clear design direction that captured their new lifestyle.

In addition to commissioning custom artwork, I also sourced all of the furniture for the project, which I customized with performance fabrics. Over the course of several shopping trips to my favorite trade resources, I found the perfect oversized leather ottoman for kicking back and relaxing in the family room, swivel chairs with custom cushions, and tasteful accessories that felt collected rather than placed.

For the dining area, I selected an oversized 66” round table which expands to an 84” round. This replaced their old oblong dining table which was too traditional. They can now seat a dozen guests without feeling cramped.

We removed the dated toile wallcovering in favor of a grasscloth which added texture and depth. I selected a statement chandelier which, when in use, diffuses warm lighting, creating an ambient glow. Casual dining chairs, an organic mirror and embroidered draperies added coziness to the space.

The essence: Soft, coastal sophistication

Their New Storybook Setting

  • Multiple spaces to host their large extended family
  • An elegant design scheme of beachy neutrals and soothing blues
  • A home that reflects the long, happy life they are enjoying together

Once upon a time this home was suited to a young family. As time went on, the children grew up and started families of their own, but the home remained the same. After my vision was installed, they experienced a new level of comfort and ease.

The updated spaces are beautiful and functional backdrops for showcasing the new art that they have collected in this exciting stage of their life. They can finally enjoy having friends and family over in spaces that they are proud of. The house, customized to their tastes and needs, is now a home to be cherished for years to come.
