The Simple Home Design Solution You’re Overlooking

Custom Window Treatments

Have you ever felt like your home is missing that certain something, but you just can’t put your finger on it? You are not alone! Many homeowners find themselves in search of that secret ingredient that pulls a space together.

In my design consultations on Long Island, I regularly meet homeowners who are dissatisfied with the look and feel of their home. Many times, they’ve invested a significant amount of money in window coverings from local stores, expecting a beautiful and personalized design, but the results fall short.

While privacy and light control are achieved, they’re left underwhelmed by the lack of warmth, coziness, and sense of cohesiveness that makes a house a home. It can be a delicate task to explain that these newly acquired window treatments are one of the main causes of their dissatisfaction.

Investing in custom window treatments goes beyond simply purchasing a functional product. It is about enhancing the beauty, value, and overall experience of your home for the long term.

Imagine for a moment, walking into a version of your home that takes your breath away. It’s been a long day and the sun is setting. A magical light filters into the various parts of your home, setting the tone for a relaxing evening. You settle down with a glass of wine or a cup of tea and admire the changing colors of the sky outside your window, which is framed with luxurious fabrics, intricate details, and expertly designed accents. You feel calm and at ease.

Together, we can make this fairytale your happily ever after.

Why Hire an Interior Designer for Window Treatments

When purchasing custom window treatments, it’s important to work with a designer who understands how to truly dress windows — not just cover them up.

As a premier provider of bespoke window treatments, I offer a unique experience that sets me apart from traditional stores on Long Island. With a keen eye for design and a passion for high style, I am here to redefine what window treatments can do for your home. I can make your ceilings appear taller, your windows grander, and your home more complete — all with well-designed window treatments.

By going beyond basic coverage, I create standout window dressings that enhance the beauty of your space and infuse your space with style, warmth, and timeless elegance.

How the Custom Window Treatment Process Works

By choosing Grunberger Interiors for your custom window treatments, you’re not just getting a product, you’re learning about your home — which solutions will provide the functionality that you need, how you can make the most of your space and create a cohesive feel — and how to infuse your unique, personal style in a way that feels intentional and seamless.

To begin this journey, I offer a complimentary discovery call, conveniently scheduled online, where I discuss your home’s needs, personal preferences, and unique style.

This valuable information allows me to curate a bespoke collection of exceptional fabrics, trims, and wallpapers in preparation for our in-home consultation. Exclusively tailored to your tastes and preferences, these materials will introduce you to a world of possibilities that go beyond what you’ll find at local stores.

Other designers will often hold back on providing this level of meticulous curation until later in the process. By exploring these handpicked materials during our consultation, I can intuitively grasp what resonates with you and what doesn’t. This focused approach ensures that our collaboration is highly efficient and productive, swiftly identifying the elements that authentically speak to your unique style and vision.

You’ve already waited long enough for your dream home experience — I won’t allow you to delay a moment longer!

Your Consultation Experience Will Exceed All Expectations

At Grunberger Interiors I believe that a custom window treatments and soft furnishings consultation should be more than just a basic evaluation of window treatment needs. Unlike standard window treatment stores, my approach goes beyond the windows to create a cohesive fabric scheme that extends throughout the space.

Window treatments are not standalone components; they are integral parts of a comprehensive design scheme. From custom decorative throw pillows, upholstered furniture, bedding, and even coordinating wallpapers, I provide a design vision complete with details that make an impact. Together we will unleash the true potential of your space, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that enriches your overall experience.

During this consultation, you can expect open discussions and collaborative brainstorming. You are invited to bring your own inspiration, which can help as we gather ideas, explore possibilities, and establish a clear design direction moving forward.

The Hunt for Fabrics, Trims, and Finishing Touches

After the consultation, I plan a visit to the renowned D&D Building in Manhattan to curate exceptional fabric and trim options based on our discussion. There, I explore a wide variety of selections from international vendors, carefully selecting the finest materials that will enhance the beauty of your home.

During our follow-up meeting, I present you with this meticulously curated assortment, which we discuss and refine until every detail is perfected to your satisfaction. Your input throughout this process is invaluable and ensures that the design reflects your tastes and preferences.

With the design components finalized, precise measurements are taken by my trusted fabricator for precision and accuracy, providing an opportunity to review any technical details that might impact the design. This meticulous planning guarantees that every detail is carefully considered. Following that, I provide you with a detailed pricing breakdown, ensuring transparency and clarity in the process.

Project Management, Expert Fabrication and Installation

At Grunberger Interiors, I personally oversee every step of the process, ensuring the highest quality workmanship and excellent customer service. From the ordering and fabrication stages to the professional installation, I take care of all the details with meticulous attention. Why Custom Windows Treatments Are Worth the Investment

Investing in custom window treatments is a significant decision for your home, and it’s important to consider the value in return. When comparing the standardized approach and basic results of traditional window treatment stores to the unique and personalized service at Grunberger Interiors, the difference is clear. I believe that your home deserves nothing less than the best, and that’s exactly what I provide.

While a free design service at a traditional store may seem appealing at first, the limitations and compromises that come with it often outweigh the convenience. Window treatments are not just about functionality; they are an investment in the long-term beauty, feel, and value of your home.

Opting for a generic approach can result in lackluster results that leave you feeling unsatisfied and with a sense that something is missing. It’s a frustrating experience that can lead to regret, knowing that your investment could have been so much more.

It’s important to note that my design service has a separate fee in addition to the cost of the window treatment. This fee is necessary to provide you with the highest level of design expertise, access to exclusive trade-only materials, attention to detail, and personalized service. Previous clients have happily testified to the value of my services, my dedication and creative vision, and ability to deliver a high-end, couture design result that is truly unique on Long Island.

How Window Treatments Can Make a Room

In the many years that I’ve been working as an interior designer here on Long Island, I’ve seen some puzzling window challenges. From disproportionate window molding(s), to awkward placement, mismatched styles and issues with scale, solving my clients’ home woes brings me great joy and satisfaction.

Common window issues I solve for:

  • Arched and oddly shaped windows
  • Bay windows
  • A bank of window
  • Windows without molding
  • Windows of varying heights
  • Improperly placed windows
  • Awkwardly positioned bedroom windows
  • Sliding doors or French doors
  • Half, ¾ or full lite doors

I truly understand why it can be difficult to conceptualize how something as seemingly simple as window treatments can transform your home. When I start working with clients, they typically can’t put their finger on what’s missing. When install day arrives, I get to witness the surprise and delight on their faces as they see for themselves what a huge difference this one element can make.

Common questions and recurring issues I run into during my interior design consultations:

  • How do I add height to my rooms?
  • How do I make my windows appear grander?
  • How can I make a room feel complete and cozy?
  • How do I dress up a boring casement window with no molding?
  • How do I dress a small window?
  • Can you mix window treatments?

The power of window dressings to change the stature and perception of the room is not to be underestimated. Selecting proper drapery hardware and placement can create the illusion of height as well as trick the eye in terms of scale. The right fabric selection and drapery style can transform your space in ways that you can't even imagine. Showing my clients what's possible is a thrill that I never tire of.

Boring windows can be breathtaking and small windows can suddenly seem like the sweetest, most unexpected moment in what was previously an unremarkable space. Each room is different, so what might be true in one room of your home may not be true in another. There is no end to what we can do to transform the inside of your home.

As for mixing window treatments, my answer is an emphatic, absolutely! Creating a layered look can be a beautiful solution. Mixing hard and soft treatments — which we’ll get into in just a bit — allows us to play with texture, color, style and functionality.

And let’s not forget the view from the outside! Window treatments can also impact your curb appeal. Have you ever driven past a house and wondered what on earth they have going on inside? We’ll consider your windows from every view and angle.

What Is The Difference Between Window Coverings and Window Dressings?

Not only can window treatments provide natural light, insulation and ventilation, but they also serve as a focal point for your interior design. And while window dressings and window coverings may seem interchangeable, they have distinct differences that can impact the look and feel of your space.

Hard Treatments Overview

  • Designed to cover
  • Custom options include measurements, colors, standardized materials
  • Lack softness (hence the name)

Traditional window treatment stores typically prioritize selling window covering products, also known as hard treatments. They are primarily functional and provide solutions to common issues like privacy, light filtration, and insulation.

As the name implies, hard treatments are any type of window treatment made of hard materials, such as wood, vinyl, or aluminum, including blinds, shutters, and shades. The sample books in these stores make it appear as though you have an abundance of choices, but when you actually look at what they are offering, it’s more of the same.

On their own, hard treatments are not enough to make your home reflect your style, let alone add pizzazz or personality. At best, they fade into the background and add nothing to your space.

This is what simple window coverage looks like...

This is what simple window coverage looks like. Most people wind up keeping the hard treatments down all of the time. They feel they paid for them, so they are somehow obligated to use them. Unfortunately, in addition to looking a bit dull, leaving them in the down position results in a loss of connection with the outdoors and a loss of natural light.

Although I do use window covering products when needed, I believe they should not be the sole focus of a whole house window treatment design. I look beyond the functional needs that a homeowner expresses to deliver a window treatment plan that elevates the home’s interior to new heights.

When hard treatments are layered with custom fabric treatments, that’s where they shine. They can create contrast, add texture, and offer layered lighting options much in the same way that an overhead light can work with a table lamp to create ambiance and variety.

If you have already invested in hard treatments, don’t fret! If there is a way for us to rescue your windows incorporating the existing treatments, I am happy to explore that with you.

This brings us to our next question… What are soft treatments?

Custom black and white window treatments

Soft Treatments Overview

  • Designed for function and style
  • Custom options are endless!
  • Broadest range of aesthetic options for any style
  • Add softness, warmth, elegance
  • Can tie into other upholstery within the space

Soft treatments are designed to enhance the aesthetic appeal of your windows while still serving a functional purpose. They can hide hardware, make a window appear taller, hide the top of a hard window treatment, create uniformity on a wall with awkwardly placed windows, and add that finishing touch. Each of these fabric-based options can be layered for a more luxurious look.

They add texture, color, and pattern to your space, and can also tie different elements of your décor together. For example, coordinating draperies with the throw pillows on your sofa can create a cohesive look in your living room.

Popular Soft Treatment Styles
  • Draperies
  • Roman shades
    • Flat
    • Folded
    • Tulip shades
    • Balloon shades
    • London shades
  • Valances
  • Cornice board(s)
  • Sheers

With window dressings, you can have it all – function, high style, and the ability to elevate the interior design of your home to a new level of sophistication and beauty. They enhance your living experience, making your house truly feel like a home.

Take a cornice board, for example. On its own, a cornice provides a clean look. When paired with a hard treatment, it can hide the shades when they are in their up position or provide a more finished and cohesive look when they are down or partially visible.

Then there are sheers, which have come back into style in a whole new way recently. This style of soft treatment which was once used solely for light filtration and privacy is now having its moment in the sun, as it were. Sheers now come in different colors, textures, designs. While they can be layered, they can also be featured as stand alone drapery panels. Many clients love this modern, ethereal and surprisingly unfussy look. Sheers can also offer a coastal, airy alternative to heavy fabrics like velvets and brocades.

Regardless of the style you select, soft window treatments offer a level of variety that hard window treatments simply cannot by nature of their design.
